SSQ – A Ward in a Nissen Hut

This Station Sick Quarters ward is clearly on a station built in wartime. The pre-war stations had proper medical blocks, whereas those on the new wartime stations usually had to make do with Nissen huts. Here a Nissen hut has been divided down the middle, and the ward shown appears to be one reserved for WAAFs.

A lot of thought and effort went into making these tiny wards pleasant places to stay, regardless of the extreme tightness of the space.

“Curtains at the windows and colourful rugs added much to the comfort and appearance. Many had flower gardens and vegetable gardens, thanks to the activities of the staff.”
